Grit & Sand Separator/Classifier in Water

Grit Washer

The NWS Grit Washer Model is designed to wash sediment taken from grit chambers in sewage treatment plants. The Grit Washer washes and dewaters the sediment and transports the resultant sand particles to a container or conveyor while the organic matter and wastewater is reintroduced into the flow stream.

The Grit Washer Design Features

The Grit Washer consists of:

  • Conical-shaped, stainless steel tank with support legs
  • Internal stainless steel overflow weir with integral drain pipe
  • Mechanical propeller
  • Stainless steel discharge conveyor with shaftless, alloy steel spiral: the drive is mounted on top of the discharge conveyor and the spiral rests on a replaceable liner inside the conveyor so there is no need for a lower bearing
  • Washwater headers
  • Automatic control valves

Grit Washer Operation

The Grit Washer receives the sediment from the grit chamber through a grit pump. A mechanically driven propeller is used to fluidize and scour the grit bed. Fluidizing the grit bed causes grit particles to shear against each other and this action separates the organic matter from the sand particles. As this occurs, the sand falls to the bottom of the tank displacing water and creating a sand bed. Wash water is then introduced to the bottom of the tank and the water carries the separated organic matter to the top of the tank and out the overflow weir.

The organic matter and excess water exit the tank through the integral drain pipe. This cleaning action helps the Grit Washer achieve a minimum of 97% organic removal with 95% retention of sand particles 0.2mm or larger. A pressure transducer is used to monitor the level of the sand bed. When the sand bed reaches a predetermined level, the discharge conveyor operates and discharges clean and dry grit particles.

Grit Classifiers

NWS® grit classifiers are used in the second phase of pre-treatment of raw water to extract suspended solids (gravel, sand and mineral particles). The purpose of the treatment with the offered equipment is to prevent clogging of the channels and pipelines, to protect the rest of the equipment in the installation from abrasive impact and to alleviate the load in the operation of the next treatment facilities. The grit classifiers consist of a chamber for entering the raw water (made  stainless steel) and a hollow chute with an installed screw that captures, retains and transports solid particles. Advantages of the offered equipment are its easy cleaning and maintenance, convenience for inspection through a hatch, design preventing problems with congestion and air tightness, and high efficiency (removes up to 97% of sand particles up to a diameter of 0.15 – 0.2 mm).

Grit Separator Classifier GSC separates & dewaters sand from water. Street sand, filter sand and similar materials can be handled.

The sand/water mix is pumped or fed into a separate tank where
the sand settles. After settling the screw conveyor dewaters & conveys the sand. Excess water during pumping flows out over a weir and is led out.
